Edward's view on Father & Son

I'm Edward Jiang, Co-Author of Father & Son and here are my feelings and views on our publication.

Father and Son: Painting as an Extension of Life is not just a book to me; it is a record of how I grew up with my father, Tao, through creation. Painting was never something I was taught in a rigid way. From the very beginning, my father gave me complete freedom: freedom to start, to stop, to experiment, to make mistakes, and to trust my own instincts. Through painting together, I learned confidence, courage, and how to listen to my inner feelings without fear.

What we created on the canvas was more than art. It was time, trust, and emotional connection made visible. Painting became a way for us to communicate beyond words, a shared space where equality, respect, and mutual inspiration naturally existed. This experience shaped how I see the world and myself. It taught me that creativity comes from life itself, and that authenticity matters more than perfection.

After the book was published, my creative path continued to extend naturally. The transition from painting to scarves was not a shift away from art, but an extension of it. I wanted to bring the spontaneity, warmth, freedom, and the impulse of life we felt while painting into something that could live with people in their everyday lives. A scarf is close to the body; it carries warmth, movement, and personal expression. Just like our paintings, each scarf is not meant to explain something, but to be felt.

Through these creations, I hope to share a sense of joy, openness, and life’s ongoing flow, the idea that art does not end in a frame, but continues to stretch, evolve, and accompany us as part of living itself.
